Looking for ways to make money with your own home based business? Need to make additional income to pay the bills? Looking to turn your love of photography into cash? You can make a very good income, part or full time, with your own home based photography business using your digital camera. Wedding Photography is an approx. $5 Billion per year industry.

With your own home based photography business, you can make an excellent part or full time income with your own digital camera. If you enjoy taking pictures and sharing them with friends and family, then you might consider taking wedding photos on weekends. Wedding photography can be a very lucrative part time of full time career. Just in the United States, the size of the Wedding Industry is approx., $5 Billion per year. That’s a sizable market. With your digital camera, you can be a part of the photography industry and make a great income. A course with business forms and information on how to use photo editing software will help you get started making money in your own home based business.

If you own a digital camera and enjoy taking photos, you can make a good income. You just need to know where to start. It is important to have business cards and other stationary to give yourself a professional appearance as well as having an understanding of what to do on the day. You will need to know how to pose the bride and groom, which photos need to be taken, what equipment issues may arise and how to do some editing in Adobe Photoshop on your computer. You will also need to know how to go about making an album for the bride and groom.

According to recent Bureau of Statistics figures, there were over half a million people who lost their jobs in the month of November alone. That means that almost two million people have lost their jobs in 2008. That is a staggering number. Most of those people will not have other options for making money. You can make up lost income with your own home based photo business. Using a good quality digital camera, you can start your own photo business and make an excellent part or full time income.

Many photographers began their careers taking photos part time. Many started with friends and family. Many also started their careers taking wedding photos on a part time basis. Many of the nations great wedding photographers began taking photos part time. It is not necessary to take a full time course for two or more years. Formal courses at universities can be very beneficial but it can take several years before you start making money. That is why courses are available online that provide everything you need to get started making an income with your own home based, photography business.

I am often asked when shooting with a digital camera what format should I shoot? Tiff, High Res JPEG, RAW etc. And the answer is very simple. RAW! There is NO other option. And you need to make sure that you are using the highest resolution (megapixels) available on your camera. An important consideration when taking photos is the format you choose. The RAW format gives you the most options for post image processing. The higher resolution gives you better chance for large prints. If you need to make large poster size photos for the couple, then you need the maximum resolution available.

The kind of digital camera you should be using to take photos, should have an accessory hot shoe so you can attach an optional flash unit designed for your system. An accessory flash unit will give you a more powerful light output so you can take better photos than with the in built unit. Virtually every photo you take on the day will be taken with flash, even when outdoors. This will provide nice even light and allow you to sell more photos after the event.

Remember, the bride and grooms parents will be looking to buy photos from you as well as many close family members. The grandparents will want photos and the bride and groom will want photos with the grandparents. These are all additional money making opportunities for you. Remember, as your own home based business, you want to be able to take advantage of every opportunity to make some additional income.

To get started in a home based photography business you need to first think of the area you want to focus on. To start in this lucrative business, it is important to pick an area to specialize in. Once you establish your business and have a few clients then it is easier to branch out into other areas. This way you can quickly get to a point of bring in revenue (money!) by seeing what works and what does not in this specific area. If you are spread out in a lot of different places you will not be able to determine what improvements are needed.

1) Start off by focusing on one or two areas:

Develop competency in one area then move on to others. To decide on which area to focus on I recommend it be something you are passionate about. For example if you are an animal lover and maybe more specifically dogs and/or cats, then begin here. Your passion will show through the lens and this will make the photos you generate more marketable.

Some of the other areas for you to consider are commercial photography, wedding photography, portraiture, and as mentioned, pet photography. Some of the differences in these areas are the level of anxiety that might come with the business. As you can probably guess wedding photography can have its benefits with the fun of the wedding and that it is pretty much a party after the ceremony. But with this comes some pressure to perform well and produce terrific photos. There are not many people more critical then a brand new bride and groom looking at their wedding photos.

On the other hand if you love animals the pet photography might be your passion. The obvious benefits are that the demand for pet photos (cute pictures of dogs, cats, birds, hamsters….) are always in high demand and most animals can be quite photogenic. However, the pitfalls are that animals can be tough to work with.

2) Decide on Your Overall Technique:

Technique refers mainly to whether you will prefer to use a candid style or more formal style in taking your pictures. The style can be directly related to the area you pick. For example, if you choose to start by focusing on portraits then that usually aligns with a formal style. For weddings you could have a mixture of styles. Usually it is more formal for the individual bride, groom and wedding party (bridesmaids and groomsmen) pictures, and yet more candid for the rehearsal dinner and reception.

From my experience, if you are just getting started, if your passion is to get into wedding photography you may want to try an area that is a little less difficult. Weddings can tend to be very high pressure due to the tight schedule, the amount of people your dealing with and the high expectations.

3) Determine the Level of Competition:

For any business you have to know what the competition is. Otherwise you are going in blind and chances are you will not succeed or at best it will be very difficult to gain a foothold in the business. By knowing your competition, you will be able to see what type of pricing. A great way to do this is to search out other Photography Business websites and just peruse the site to see what they are offering and then determine from that how you can bring something unique and marketable.

4) Find a Mentor

Many professional photographers are willing to let you work with them as an assistant (most of them need the help). From this work as an assistant you can pick up on the experience of your mentor. As you gain experience, ask to be able to take more responsibility and your knowledge will grow quickly. Even ask to be involved in the business side of things (not just taking pictures). That way you will also pick up the knowledge of how to run a home photography business on your own!

So you want to start your own photography business from home. In today’s world, this is a lot easier than it once was. Now you no longer need a dark room and equipment, and messy chemicals to develop your photos. This makes the ongoing costs of photography less expensive than ever before.

Do you have a passion for photography? Do you dream of making your hobby into a full-time job working for yourself? All you need is a place at home converted into a work space, and you are ready to setup and start working. You will also need to market yourself so people know what you do and how to find you.

Make sure you have a good portfolio to show potential clients.

Think of it like this – Would you a hire a photographer if they could not show you examples of their work to impress you? If the answer is no then – Why would your potential clients hire you if you don’t have an impressive portfolio?

Photography Equipment for Starting Out

All you need to start is a good SLR digital camera, a photo editing program like Adobe Photoshop and a computer. This is how simplistic photographic equipment has become. You can go out and spend money on extra equipment but until you can afford more, you can always hire it.

Skills of a Digital Photographer

In the old days, a photographer needed very specialist skills. That’s not to say they don’t still. It is just the focus on skills has changed. The digital age has made it so much easier to manipulate and print your own photos and images. There is no more buying, wasting or developing film. Anyone with a good eye, a love for photography and a willingness to learn can turn their hobby into a successful photography business.

The demand for photographs is higher than ever before; what, with online businesses shooting up all over the place. That doesn’t look like stopping any time soon. But the price paid for photographs is lower than in the past. This is because competition has risen so much with so many photographers competing against each other worldwide. However, there has been a rise in demand for photos. More and more people are shopping online. Every e-commerce website needs photos of their products. Every corner of the market needs more photos than ever because they are now so much more visual – travel agents, real estate, celebrations; really, anything you can think of can be a subject for a photograph that can be something someone needs.

When thinking of setting up as a freelance photographer think about what niche market your interests fit into. See what people are already doing and charging, and look at where you fit in. What do you do that is so special? Take a look at other photographer’s prices and see if you can charge less. But in considering this, think about your skills and make sure you do not undervalue yourself or your overheads. There is no point working cheaper than your competitors if it means you make no money. You will from time to time need to transfer ownership of your images to a customer and it’s good to have forms in place to assist with quick and smooth transition. You may want to think about some standard forms for varying occasions.

Business Planning yourself into the Future

As for any other business, it is wise to write yourself a business plan. This will guide you through your initial setup stages as well as into the future. It can be a useful implement for many different purposes. A business plan should include: – your goals, – financial projections, – pricing, – current financial position, – marketing plan, – a mission statement, and – how you will achieve your goals.

It is a good reference document to keep you and your business on track. Your business plan should be regularly updated to reflect the growth of your business.

A business plan should include whether you are a sole trader or whether you are going to form a company to work under; you business or trading name and where you intend to operate from. Your business plan should be detailed; include any future goals and set yourself milestones to reach. This gives you a good guide on how to get there, but if your needs change, update the business plan.

A business plan also needs details of your financial and business history. One day you may need to apply for a loan and lenders will want to see something in writing to show them you are serious about your business.

A clear marketing plan of how you are going to reach your objectives and potential clients is an absolute must. Include things like what sets you apart from other photographers. Think about what type of customers you want. Take a second to think if it will be something like portrait or baby photography. Do you want to specifically target these markets? There are many different types of photography, consider carefully if you would prefer to specialize in one or two? Maybe target your business at your area of expertise then grow or branch out from there. Ask yourself if you are happy with a small, part-time business, or if you want to target a wider market full-time. Consider whether you need a website to market your skills. Ask yourself how many other avenues you can reach to enhance your customer base?

Another part of you business plan should outline the strengths and weaknesses of your competitors. Look at their services and how you can compete. Find out their prices. This is fairly easy these days as most people post their prices on their websites. Explain how go about your business or indeed highlight the parts of your business that benefits the customer. How are you going to make money? What expenditure do you need in the first few years? How are you going to finance that? How much have you got in the bank to support you through any tough times in the first 2 years? What insurances do you need? How are you going to keep track of your customers, billing, and the everyday running of your business? How are you going to deal with your taxes?

Check that you do not need licenses in your state to run a business from home. Take a look at how you will expand into the future. Work out if your business can cover your expenses. If you are intending to leave a full-time job, it may pay to start out small and build your business up to where you can cut your days at your other job. Do not be too hasty to jump in. Always protect your financial situation.

As you can see, anyone can start a business as a photographer. The difference between success or not is in your planning and control of the related elements in your life and above all, you must enjoy photography.
